Graffiti Panel Discussion + Screening at the Embassy of Spain, DC

The Streets Speak
The Streets Scream
We may not be listening. But we react.

The fight for a voice in Barcelona has arisen due to a rise in fines and stricter laws. On October 16, the documentary Las Calles Hablan (2013) will be screened at the Embassy of Spain making it’s United States debut in Washington, D.C. Until now there hasn’t been a definitive film made in Barcelona which explores the history, motivation, politics and the numerous characters involved in the street art scene. Las Calles Hablan is a story about discovering a hidden world, an extraordinary subculture and the struggle between an artistic community painting for freedom of expression and an increasingly restrictive dogmatic government.

Come watch Las Calles Hablan and hear the voices of the Barcelona streets. Followed by a panel discussion on Barcelona street art, as well as delving into the role it plays in D.C. art and culture. Joining us in this discussion are local artist Kelly Towles, local artist / documentary filmmaker Apoxy (Chocolate City Burning: The Untold Story of Dot Com, 2009), local artist HKS181 and community advocate for Shaw, Sudi West. The panel will be moderated by co-producer of Las Calles Hablan, Katrine Knauer.
